Ok, I’ll be the first to admit that lately, or at least over the last few years, I’ve not been the healthiest of people.  I tend to eat and drink a lot of those things that taste great… but aren’t any good for you.  Reaching number 8 in the charts with “Affirmation” in July 2000, Savage Garden annoyingly pointed out the obvious… “I believe that junk food tastes so good because it’s bad for you.”  Irritatingly obvious, but their sentiment rings true as a stark reminder that all this stuff really… REALLY… is bad for you.  Not necessarily in moderation…  but lately I have not been keeping score.

The Christmas period is one of the worst times of the year for doing this to me – making me eat and drink lots of rubbish, and then suffer the consequences afterwards.  This year I feel worse than ever, which is why I have decided to make quite a big change.

I tried the whole Dry January thing, where you were supposed to go without alcohol for the entire month of January, but that fell flat on its bum within the first week.  At Revolution 96.2, we recently teamed up with Oldham Council to promote an initiative called “The Drop,” a scheme intended to provide help and advice to people who wanted to make healthier lifestyle changes – quit smoking, get active, change diet, etc.  It got me thinking… and realising… that I really needed to do something.

I knew if I was going to do this, I would probably struggle to do it alone.  The girlfriend had also been moaning to me recently that she feels unhappy with her health and would like to make some changes… and this is where I saw a way in…

My willpower is rubbish… but the girlfriend’s is quite good, and she can get quite competitive and obsessive.  Think “Monica from Friends.”  So I knew that if I suggested an idea, she would be all over it and would keep me in line.

For a while, the concept of “juicing” keeps haunting me, I hear people talking about it, I see people posting online about it, and it seems to be everywhere I go.  There is no escaping the juicing train!  So with that in mind, I thought I’d jump aboard…

So let me start the ball rolling with…

GreenSlush

I mention the concept to the girlfriend… then I blinked… and she’d ordered a juicer.  Today… it arrived!

I’ve been rather hesitant about the whole thing, considering a majority of the contents appear to be vegetables.  Liquid vegetables… all of which look rather vomit-inducing.  Or look like someone has already vomited.  But there is fruit involved. depending on which one you go for, so that perks up my interest a little.

So with that in mind, let’s see how well this goes.  If you are a regular juicer, maybe you could throw some ideas my way, because I’m effectively fumbling around in the dark with this stuff!  Heavier on the fruit, not so much on the veg, is probably the way I’ll be going first.

Wish me luck…
